Chapter Seven

Quint walked into the front office, shutting the door that separated the holding cells from the main area of business behind him.

"Alfred's sleeping it off," he told Carl. "You'd think at his age he'd find something more useful to do with his time than change his blood composition."

It was close to six, time to be shutting down. He had a hot meal and a warm wife waiting for him. Tracy had already left for the night and Bill, the security guard they had manning the sheriff's office at night, was due in shortly.

Quint glanced toward Carl, expecting to see him working at his desk. Instead he saw that the computer was off and Carl was on his feet, obviously through for the day.

"You're leaving on time tonight." Well, that was unusual. "Planning on going over to my folks for an early dinner?" Quint wanted to know.

Carl shook his head. He should have just slipped out when Quint was busy in the back locking up Alfred Cummings, the town drunk, for the night. "No. I'm not going there tonight."

Carl's evasive tone piqued Quint's curiosity. "Seeing Melinda?"

Saying no would technically be a lie, even though he didn't want his cousin to make anything of this. "Only as she's going out the door."

The thing Quint liked best about working with Carl was the way they always got along. Most of the time they were on the same wavelength. But lately that hadn't been true. Ever since Melinda had returned.

Quint frowned. "You know, you didn't used to be this difficult to have a conversation with—or to figure out."

Carl knew if he didn't answer Quint directly, he was going to be the subject of endless subtle and not-so-subtle prodding and poking. Carl decided to get it over with. "Melinda starts classes tonight to get certified so that she can teach here in Serendipity. I offered to watch the triplets until she gets home."

Quint hooted at the image that brought to mind. Leaning a hip against the side of his desk, he crossed his arms before him and scrutinized his cousin.

"You. Watching triplets. Are you planning on charging admission so we can come and watch? Might make a lot of money that way." Abandoning his post, Quint crossed to him. His cousin hadn't a clue what he was letting himself in for. "Do you even know the first thing about watching triplets?"

Maybe lying would have been the better way to go. Carl regretted not attempting it. "It's one kid times three, I'll handle it. It's not like I haven't been around them before."

"With their mother." Quint pointed out the fact loftily.

Carl didn't see the point here. "Yes."

Not a clue, Quint thought again, shaking his head. "Big difference when you're on your own, trust me." He clamped a hand on Carl's shoulder. "Even with your own." The memory returned to him vividly. "The first time Ginny left me with Rhena, I was a basket case by the time she came back. Just between you and me, I'd rather face down a gang of modern-day cattle rustlers than be in a roomful of kids on my own.
